Virago has published an exclusive piece Virginia wrote about the inspirational woman behind her ongoing love of Rome. 

The paperback edition of Early One Morning is published on April 7th.  Waterstones announces that it is one of their Spring bookclub choices. 


The Turkish edition, Bir Sabah Erkenden,  has arrived. Published by Timas, Istanbul, it has a different but equally evocative cover. The end papers depict a beautiful, muted panorama of Rome. 


Virginia's publicist, Zoe Hood has been shortlisted for the best publicity campaign of the year in the hardback fiction category at the PPC (Publishers Publicity circle) awards for her work on Early One Morning.  


Early One Morning is to come out in Bulgaria with the rights there acquired by ERA Media – taking it up to 11 languages in translation. 


Little, Brown - publishers of Early One Morning via its Virago imprint - has announced the launch of a new standalone imprint called Fleet.

Launching in May 2016, Fleet will be headed by Ursula Doyle. The paperback edition of Early One Morning will be its launch title.


The year has started with a red theme.  Red magazine in the UK named Early One Morning as one of the best books of 2015 describing it as ‘a beautifully written, wonderfully atmospheric and evocative novel of love and loss.”

 In the United States, Redbook magazine included Early One Morning in its roundup of the best books by women in 2015 and called it “utterly breathtaking.”

Early One Morning has been chosen in several ‘Best Books of 2015’ lists. The Express called it a ‘powerful tale of life, love and loss.’  The Daily Mail said it was ‘emotionally intelligent, finely and feelingly written’. The LiterarySofa said ‘the characters… really touched me and live on in my memory.’

The submission deadline for the 11th volume of the Riptide Journal of short stories (edited by Virginia Baily and Dr Sally Flint) is November 30th.

The BBC dramatisation of Early One Morning begins on Radio 4 Women's Hour.

Greta Scacchi, Juliet Aubrey and Sophie Melville star in Miranda Emmerson's dramatisation of Virginia Baily's novel of love, loss and learning to be a mother. The 10-part series was directed by Emma Harding.


Virginia appeared at Cheltenham Literature Festival alongside Rosamund Lipton, author of The Quality of Silence

Virginia also appeared at Manchester Literature Festival, where she spoke in an event at the Portico Library with Polly Samson.

Virginia gave a talk entitled 'How to turn ideas into stories', which traced the pathways between ideas and stories and looked at the importance of music, solid objects and a sense of place in translating the abstract into the concrete and bringing a story to life.
